Why Meditate?

If we train in meditation our mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and we will experience a purer and purer form of happiness. Eventually we will be able to stay happy all the time, even in the most difficult circumstances.

By training in meditation, we create an inner space and clarity that enable us to control our mind regardless of the external circumstances. Gradually we develop mental equilibrium, a balanced mind that is happy all the time, rather than an unbalanced mind that oscillates between the extremes of excitement and despondency.

If we train in meditation systematically, we will eventually be able to eradicate all the delusions from our mind that are the causes of all our problems and suffering.

Kadampa Buddhism is a Mahayana Buddhist school founded by the great Indian Buddhist master Atisha (984-1052). In the word "Kapdampa" "Ka" refers to Buddha's teachings and "dam" to Atisha's twenty-one virtuous "Lamrim," or stages of the path, meditations. Kadampas, then, are practitioners who regard Buddha's teachings as personal instructions and put them into practice by following the instructions of Lamrim.

By integrating their understanding of all Buddha's teachings into their practice of Lamrim, and by integrating their experience of Lamrim into their everyday lives, Kadampas use Buddha's teachings as practical methods for transforming daily activities into the path to enlightenment. Through the practice of "training the mind" or Lojong, all our daily life experiences, and especially all our problems, suffering and difficulties can be transformed into the spiritual path.
